Watermelon Stars on Skewers – Easy 4th of July Fruit Recipe
These watermelon star skewers with blueberries are the easiest, most festive Fourth of July treat! Ready in minutes, totally customizable, and no baking required.
Prep Time 15 minutes mins
chilling time (optional) 30 minutes mins
Total Time 45 minutes mins
- 1 seedless watermelon or half, depending on how many you're making
- 2 cups fresh blueberries
- Wooden or bamboo skewers
Step 1: Slice the watermelon
Cut your watermelon into even slabs about 1 inch thick. Lay each slab flat on a cutting board.
Step 2: Cut out the stars
Press your star-shaped cookie cutter firmly into each watermelon slab and push out the shape. Repeat until you have as many stars as you need. Save the leftover watermelon for snacking!
Step 3: Assemble the skewers
Thread a blueberry onto the skewer, then a watermelon star, then more blueberries. You can do as many or as few per skewer as you like. Mix in strawberries or other fruit for variety.
Step 4: Arrange on a platter
Lay the finished skewers on a large platter or board. Scatter extra blueberries and fruit around the skewers to fill in gaps and make it look extra festive.
Step 5: Serve immediately or chill
These are best served fresh but can be covered and refrigerated for up to 4 hours before serving.
- Choose a ripe watermelon — look for one that feels heavy for its size and has a creamy yellow spot on the bottom where it sat on the ground. A ripe watermelon means sweeter, juicier stars.
- Slice evenly — aim for slabs about 1 inch thick so your stars hold their shape on the skewer without breaking.
- Pat dry before skewering — watermelon releases a lot of juice. A quick pat with a paper towel helps everything stay in place.
- Use longer skewers — 10–12 inch skewers give you room to really load them up with fruit.
- Make ahead smartly — cut the stars up to a day ahead and store them in an airtight container in the fridge. Assemble the skewers the morning of your event for the freshest result.
