Why You’ll Love Making It
- Quick & Easy – You only need 3 simple ingredients and about 10 minutes of prep time.
- No Baking Required – A perfect treat for kids to help with in the kitchen.
- Customizable – Add chocolate chips, sprinkles, peanut butter, or drizzle with melted chocolate for a fun twist.
- Crowd-Pleaser – Great for school lunches, parties, and holiday get-togethers.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter – Use unsalted butter for best results. Avoid margarine or reduced-fat butter, as they can affect texture.
- 1 package (10 oz., about 40) JET-PUFFED Marshmallows OR 5-1/2 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows – Fresh marshmallows melt more smoothly and create the best texture.
- 6 cups Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal – Be sure to use fresh, crispy cereal for the best crunch. Stale cereal can make the treats soggy.
Instructions
Step 1: Melt the Butter
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat, stirring occasionally. Keeping the heat low prevents the butter from browning or burning.
Step 2: Melt the Marshmallows
Add the marshmallows to the saucepan and stir constantly until they are completely melted and smooth. Remove from heat immediately to prevent overcooking, which can make the treats hard.
Step 3: Combine with Cereal
Pour the Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal into the melted marshmallow mixture. Use a rubber spatula to gently fold everything together until the cereal is fully coated. Be patient and work quickly before the mixture cools.
Step 4: Transfer to Pan
Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan with nonstick spray. Using a buttered spatula or a piece of wax paper, press the mixture evenly into the pan. Don’t press too hard—you want light, chewy treats, not dense ones.
Step 5: Cool & Cut
Let the treats cool at room temperature for about 20 minutes. Once set, use a sharp knife to cut into 12 squares. Serve immediately or store for later.
FAQs
Why are my Rice Krispies Treats™ hard?
This usually happens if the marshmallows are overheated or if the mixture is packed too tightly into the pan. To prevent this, melt the marshmallows over low heat and press the mixture into the pan gently rather than compacting it too much.
Can I make Rice Krispies Treats™ without marshmallows?
Yes! You can use marshmallow crème (1 jar, 7 oz.) as a substitute. Some people also use peanut butter and honey as a binder for a slightly different texture and taste.
